This week we will be focusing on diatonic chords and songs that use them. Here is our first....
Let's figure it out....
J Dilla's Donuts is one of the most important instrumental hip-hop albums. It was released just over 10 years ago (Feb. 6, 2006) 3 days before Dilla passed away. Most of the album was created in from his hospital bed using a Boss Sp-303 and a portable 45 player. Dilla was a hugely influential producer. He was behind the group Slum Village and worked with The Pharcyde, A Tribe Called Quest, Busta Rhymes, The Roots, and a bunch of other people/groups. His music is still influencing hip hop and jazz artists today (The pianist Robert Glasper comes to mind...)
Remember to listen for the interval between the first and second notes. If you hear a Major 3rd first, the chord could either be a Major 7th or a Dominant 7th. If you hear a Minor 3rd first, then it has to be a Minor 7th.
What is your Major 3rd song? (i.e. a song that starts with a major 3rd. The following start with a Major 3rd, When the Saints go Marching In, Four Seasons:Spring by Vivaldi, etc)
What is your Minor 3rd song? (Iron Man, Seven Nation Army, Smoke on the Water)
